CHAPTER THIRTEEN

It was dark out when Morgan opened her eyes and Cipher wasn’t lying close. She saw him on the other side of the fire and it made her frown. And then the frown made her scowl. They’d fucked. Cuddles were not an obligation.

Though it might have been nice. The night around her was chilly.

That was a sure sign that the effects of the monster meat had worn off. While caught in the grip of its passion, she could have run naked through the tundra and not felt the cold.

Her body ached from all the ways that Cipher had taken her, and it certainly hadn’t been just once. The effects of the meat had started to wear off after their second round, but neither of them had said a word. And by the fourth round, her head was clear. And the only arousal she felt came straight from her desire for Cipher.

It had been a night out of time, one she would hold close and remember until she was an old lady, surrounded by cats. If she lived that long. Or got to a planet where cats existed.

Bart.

Shit.

In the sudden flurry of heat and need, she’d forgotten to tell Cipher about Bart. Or perhaps she’d never meant to. Her thoughts from before dinner were all muddled together. She knew the beacon didn’t work and that they were stranded.

Unless she took Bart’s offer and took her ride off on the hopes that a known scoundrel wouldn’t betray her.

She had to try.

What would happen if she stayed here for any longer with Cipher?

Her emotions would get even more tangled up, that was for sure. And if he returned to the cold-hearted asshole who’d been with her before dinner, it would hurt. Of course, a bit of emotional pain would be nothing compared to what Bart could do to her if he was planning to betray her.

Again.

She could feel the edges of a headache coming on and forced herself to take several deep breaths to clear her head. She needed to be logical about this.

If Cipher weren’t here, would she go with Bart?

Yes.

Would she still doubt Bart’s intentions?

Yes.

But it would get her off this planet. If she was expecting a betrayal, she could plan for it. This wasn’t like the first time. She wouldn’t be new to the ship and so happy to have a job that she’d overlook the shady things the crew did.

Cipher grunted in his sleep and rolled to one hip, showing a wide swath of his naked back to her.

Morgan bit her lip and curled her hands into fists to keep from doing anything stupid, like scooting over and joining him. She’d never leave their shelter then.

But her body would be so satisfied that it would take her a long time to regret it.

She quietly and quickly found her boots and pulled them on. She’d put on the rest of her clothes before finally falling into her doze. The dragon on the other side of the fire might be able to sleep shirtless, but her human body had its limits.
